I have signed the pledgebank pledge against Identity cards, the Home Office’s insane scheme to give 10 billion pounds of taxpayers money to the IT industry.

Setting aside the war in Iraq and foundation hospitals for one moment, the ID cards scheme is one of the most bewilderingly insane things ‘New’ Labour is trying to pass through. Apart from the civil liberties argument, the fact that the government, which has an *astonishingly* bad track record of IT cock-ups, will be entrusting the running of the scheme to a private company, is beyond belief. Especially in an age where we are all being warned of the perils of identity theft. What a waste of money. And it has been proved that ID cards don’t ‘work’ (UK, World War 2; France, present day).
